light

the electromagnetic spectrum — visible light, infrared heat, ultraviolet from the sun, radio waves carrying signals, X-rays through bones. light is simultaneously a wave and a particle. the duality is the deepest mystery in physics and the child encounters it every day: rainbow (wave) and solar panel (particle)

why light deserves its own domain

light is how information travels across the universe. every star the child sees is a message that took years to arrive. the solar panel converts light to electricity — the foundation of Type I energy. the eye converts light to neural signals — the foundation of perception. fiber optics carry light as data — the foundation of the internet. mastering light is mastering information, energy, and perception simultaneously

at cyber valley, the equatorial position means intense, direct sunlight year-round. tropical storms create spectacular lightning. the elevation provides clear night skies. sinwood bioluminescence demonstrates light from biology. the child lives in an optical laboratory

progression

explorer (0-2 years)

light experience:

  • bright and dark: day/night cycle, room with light on/off, candle flame, flashlight beam
  • shadow: her shadow follows her, changes size and direction with the sun
  • color: red flowers, green leaves, blue sky, yellow banana — colors are properties of light
  • reflection: mirrors, water surface, polished metal — "another me"
  • heat and light together: sun warms skin and lights the world simultaneously
  • fire: flame produces both light and heat. the two are connected
  • bioluminescence: glowing fungi in sinwood at night — light from life

target by age 2: knows sun makes light and heat, recognizes her shadow, fascinated by flames and glowing things

builder (2-5 years)

optics:

  • rainbow: rain + sun = spectrum. use a garden hose to make rainbows on demand. white light is all colors together
  • prism: glass prism splits white light into the full spectrum — same as rainbow but controllable
  • color mixing: red + blue = purple, red + green = yellow (light mixing, different from paint mixing)
  • pinhole camera: dark box + tiny hole = upside-down image of the outside. first camera = first physics
  • magnifying glass: bends light, makes things bigger. focus sunlight on a point — heat! light carries energy
  • UV awareness: sunburn comes from invisible light. sunscreen blocks UV. some insects see UV flowers
  • polarization: polarized sunglasses reduce glare — light waves vibrating in one direction only
  • night sky: stars are distant suns. moon reflects sunlight. planets wander among stars
  • speed of light: "nothing moves faster." see lightning, count to thunder — light arrives instantly, sound is slow

target by age 5: can make a rainbow with a hose, knows white light contains all colors, has used a magnifying glass to focus heat, understands that stars are far-away suns

maker (5-7 years)

electromagnetic spectrum:

  • "visible light is just one small part" — the full spectrum from radio to gamma rays
  • infrared: feel heat radiating from fire before touching it. thermal camera (phone app) shows heat as color
  • ultraviolet: black light makes white clothes glow (fluorescence). sun produces UV. bees see UV patterns on flowers
  • radio: radio receiver picks up invisible waves. wifi is radio. same physics as visible light, different wavelength
  • laser: focused, coherent light. point a laser through smoke — see the beam. compare to flashlight spreading out
  • fiber optics: light bouncing inside a tube of glass. this is how internet data travels
  • photoelectric effect: light hits metal → electrons ejected. this is what solar panels do. Einstein won the Nobel for explaining this, not relativity
  • spectroscopy: every element emits specific colors when heated. look at a streetlight through a prism — distinct lines. "this is how we know what stars are made of"
  • wave-particle duality: "light is both a wave (rainbow, diffraction) and a particle (photoelectric effect). both are true simultaneously. this is the deepest puzzle in physics"
  • LED: electricity → light (opposite of solar panel: light → electricity). the same physics in reverse

target by age 7: draws the electromagnetic spectrum from radio to gamma, explains how solar panels work (photoelectric effect), has done spectroscopy with salt + flame + prism, understands wave-particle duality as a real mystery
