compost

every plot turns its organic waste into soil. soil policy makes it a duty; this page is the method.

what goes in

in kitchen scraps · garden cuttings · leaves · manure of herbivores · coffee grounds · paper towels · wood ash · biochar
out meat and bones · dairy · oil · glass · metal · plastic · coated paper · pet faeces

the system per dwelling

  1. two bins — one filling, one curing; each at least 1 m³
  2. layers — green (fresh, wet) and brown (dry, woody) by volume 1:2; a handful of soil or finished compost per layer
  3. moisture — damp as a wrung sponge; covered against rain
  4. heat — 55 °C for three days in a row kills weed seed and pathogens; turn the pile each week while it heats
  5. cure — two to three months in the second bin; ready when dark, crumbly, earth-smelling
  6. biochar — charge biochar in compost for a month before it goes into the soil

where it goes

finished compost goes to the plot's own garden first. surplus goes to the estate nursery through the recycling hub, and is logged there by weight.

blackwater

human waste goes to the plot's biodigester under the design code. digestate from the biodigester feeds trees and ornamentals; the compost bins feed the food garden.
